2007 JRGBC Green Leadership Awards Luncheon

The Third Annual JRGBC Green Building Leadership Awards Luncheon was a great success.

Luncheon1      Luncheon 2

Almost 200 people were on hand for the luncheon where Dennis Creech, Executive Director of Southface Energy Institute, gave a keynote address.

Keynote speaker, Dennis Creech, Executive Director of Southface Energy Institute, addresses the audience.

The JRGBC Board, after receiving nominations from its membership and recommendations form the Awards Committee, presented the following awards:

Non-Profit
Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Hummanity
Sylvia Hallock, Jocelyn Scheer, and Steve Scheibe, representing the Virginia Habitat for Humanity, receive the Non-Profit Award.

The state Habitat for Humanity office has made a serious commitment to greening the Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout Virginia. After securing a grant from a local foundation, Habitat has a commitment to build 27 Habitat Homes that will be certified under the EarthCraft green builder program. Several homes have already been certified and many others are currently under construction. This is the first time that Habitat for Humanity has committed to green building for all of its homes on a state-wide basis. Habitat for Humanity has plans for 40 additional EarthCraft homes next year. This effort has been successful under the leadership of Sylvia Hallock, state Habitat for Humanity Director.

Government
Virginia Department of Transportation
VDOT
Connie Sorrell and Jake Porter of the Virginia Department of Transportion, receive the Government Award.

VDOT’s Asset Management Division, thanks to Special Facilities Program Manager Jacob Porter and his project teams, recently demonstrated its green building leadership by requiring that a series of three new safety, rest area and information centers be designed and built to achieve USGBC LEED Silver-level certification. The New Kent County westbound replacement building and site have already exceeded all expectations by landing the Gold-level plaque under budget and ahead of schedule. This high-performance facility, employing energy-efficient ground-source heating and cooling, innovative stormwater management and decorative recycled materials, educates thousands of travelers each year.

Private Sector
Scandia USA, Inc.
Scandia
Roger Petersen and his son Roger Petersen, II, of Scandia USA, receive the Private Sector Award.

Scandia USA, Inc. is the builder of the Townhomes at Rocketts Landing, in Richmond, Virginia. By reclaiming a previously developed site, no additional green space has been cleared for this project. And thanks to environmentally-conscious design, the Townhomes at Rocketts Landing require less energy, water, land and materials than conventional construction while bringing new life back to an urban area. The Townhomes feature Energy Star appliances, insulated roofing, high-efficiency heating and air conditioning systems, high-performance wood windows and six inches of blown in cellulose wall insulation, pure air filtration systems, energy recovery air exchangers, and utilize zero-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints. The Townhomes also feature green roof technology, which is estimated to increase the units’ energy efficiencies by 30%, while also reducing storm water runoff and minimizing the urban heat island effect.

Individual
Governor Tim Kaine
Govenor
Steve Walz accepts the Invididual Award on behalf of Governor Kaine.

Governor Tim Kaine has committed his administration to green high performance buildings. Early this year, Governor Kaine issued Executive Order 48, which set significant energy efficiency goals in all areas of government operations. This Executive Order includes reference to the use of LEED Green Building Rating System as an approved benchmark for all state owned or leased buildings. The powerful message of this Order has also been picked up by many of the state’s public and private universities, as well as by local school systems. Recently, while addressing an audience in Roanoke, Governor Kaine stressed the importance of green building in helping to meet the state’s energy goals. In addition to his efforts in greening Virginia’s public buildings, Governor Kaine also participated earlier this year in an announcement by the Homebuilders Association of Virginia regarding their endorsement of EarthCraft as their recommended green builder program for its members.

After the luncheon, the attendees and general public were able to view the displays and exhibits in and around the Rotunda at the Science Museum of Virginia. Over 30 exhibitors were on hand to show green products. This full-day of Living Green was possible with the partnership of Style Weekly and concluded with Style Weekly’s Reader Poll Green Hero Emerald Awards for individuals who have made significant contributions to the environment. The JRGBC is very proud of its own Karl Bren who received the first award.

Karl Bren
Karl Bren, Green Visions Consulting, receives Style Weekly's First Annual Reader Poll Green Hero Emerald Award for his commitment to the environment.

The JRGBC plans to partner with Style Weekly again next year to make Living Green even bigger and better. Thank you to all of the sponsors and exhibitors who made this day a great success for everyone!
